Technical Definition of Seed Oils
A seed oil is an oil extracted from the seed of a plant. Examples include castor, sunflower, safflower, soybean, and grapeseed. These oils differ in fatty acid composition, oxidative stability, and functional behavior. In soapmaking, seed oils are evaluated by their saponification value, fatty acid profile, and performance characteristics rather than dietary relevance.
Non-Seed Oils Used in Lil Swatara Soap
Most oils in Lil Swatara Soap are not seed oils. They are fruit oils, animal fats, or functional fatty acids. These include:
- Olive oil (fruit)
- Tallow (animal fat)
- Coconut oil (fruit/meat)
- Palm oil (fruit)
- Stearic acid (fatty acid)
These ingredients contribute hardness, longevity, mildness, and stable lather. Their fatty acid profiles are well suited for cold process soap and produce bars with consistent performance.

Castor Oil: The Only Seed Oil Used
Castor oil (Ricinus communis) is the only seed oil used in Lil Swatara Soap. It is selected for its unique chemical composition. Castor oil contains approximately 85 to 90 percent ricinoleic acid, a rare fatty acid that increases solubility, stabilizes lather, and improves bubble structure. This makes castor oil functionally different from high-PUFA seed oils such as sunflower or safflower.
While dietary seed oils face public scrutiny over oxidative stability and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) degradation, cosmetic-grade castor oil behaves entirely differently. Its high viscosity and unique molecular structure make it immune to the typical pitfalls of seed oil panic, meaning it does not contribute to rancidity or dreaded orange spots (DOS).
Castor oil is an industrial oil used in cosmetics, lubricants, coatings, and specialty chemical applications. Its stability and performance characteristics make it suitable for cold process soap.
Agricultural Characteristics of Castor Plants
Castor plants grow rapidly and produce a high number of seeds. In favorable conditions, plants can reach heights of 15 to 20 feet in a single season. Each plant produces numerous seed pods, each containing three seeds. Oil content typically ranges from 40 to 55 percent, making castor a high-yield oilseed crop.
These agricultural traits explain why castor oil is widely available and consistently used in cosmetic formulations. Its growth behavior and yield differ significantly from food-oriented seed oils.

Why Other Seed Oils Are Not Used
High-PUFA seed oils such as sunflower, safflower, soybean, and grapeseed are intentionally excluded from Lil Swatara Soap. Their fatty acid profiles cause rapid oxidation, soft bars, and reduced shelf stability. These oils are more prone to rancidity and do not support the long-lasting structure required for premium cold process soap.
Saponification Behavior
During saponification, oils react with sodium hydroxide to form sodium salts of fatty acids. This chemical transformation means the original oil is no longer present in its dietary form. Soap performance depends on the resulting fatty acid salts, not the nutritional properties of the original oils.
